Friday the 13th March 2009 was MOJITO DAY at Tina's Hostel

The gusty winds of March are here again & following close behind is the windsurfing expat community of Caye Caulker who migrate this way this time of year & can be seen zipping around at 15 knots per hour on the choppy seas just about every perfect windsurfing day this month. A few adults come by the park next door to fly their kites, sans kids, on a regular basis.

TMM Charter Catamarans are whizzing by with sun-drenched passengers with big white toothy smiles contrasting the dark sunburned skin, on their glorious once in a lifetime island hopping type of sea adventure, no doubt, imagining themselves as Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.

While much of the paint meant for the wall was making its way on to my person on Friday 13th when I decided to contribute manual labor to Tinas Hostel upgrade and paint some walls, I was relieved when the Ace Italian female bartender, who has worked in hop-mad clubs in London & Rome, decided to make up a batch of her speciality drink, the MOJITO, of which she says brought her loyal customers to the clubs where she worked for this Cuban inspired drink.

After scouring Caye Caulker earlier in the day & finding not one mint leaf anywhere, she had taken the liberty to take the water taxi all the way to Ambergris Caye to fetch a batch of fresh Mint leaves which is the star ingredient for her special drink.

Guest: "Why is it she couldn't find one Mint leaf on Caye Caulker for a Mojito, but as soon as you step off the water taxi or walk the streets you are offered marijuana leaf everywhere?

Wrong kind of leaf she was looking for. What kind of drink can she make with that? Marijuanito instead of the Mojito?"

MOJITO RECIPE

(refreshing drink)

Fill cup with ice, pour white rum 3/4 way over ice, splash with sprite, two squeeze of lime, plenty of mint leaves & a tea spoon of brown sugar. Stir & Serve. Delish!

It wasn't long before Ms. Kim from Portland, Oregon who is also a guest and keeps us entertained with her singing and guitar playing all week, decided to join the Italian bartender's Mojito party which sucked me in,
thus leaving me once again unable to accomplish anything I ever start as far as REAL w-o-r-k is concerned here at the hostel, so I surrendered & put the paint brush down.
