COCONUTS KILL MORE PEOPLE THAN SHARKS

I remember, Caye Caulker 1997 - when everybody on the island was in a panic after the news continue to spread over several weeks, of sightings of a gigantic Hammerhead Shark INSIDE the reef which is only a half mile away. The huge shark was seen prowling too close to shore for islanders comfort.

People on the tip of short docks about 200 feet offshore, who fish at sunset for little pan fry size snappers on the same dock where kids swim during the day, would report being startled by a huge shark passing near. Sightings were occuring more frequently and those who could remember the movie JAWS from the 80's started to fear fiction might turn into reality.

You couldn't keep the children of the island out of the water, so a dive shop owner set out to capture the beast before we live out JAWS. This is what they caught.

I remember this alright. Valentin of Big Fish Little Fish Dive Shop caught this massive hammerhead shark. I can also remember when people said that they saw a hammerhead on and around inside the reef. At that time I never imagined that we had hammerhead sharks around. Don't remember, this shark measured about 13-15 feet. Thanks for sharing the photo Tina! Cheers, Cousin Liz
