Even on peaceful small islands like Caye Caulker with a population of 2000 and growing fast, petty crimes have always existed, but is now on the rise. With growing tourism on Caye Caulker comes growing crime. Where there are easy thief victims, the predators will follow. Tourists come and quickly relax with the laid back vibe, forget the handbag on the beach while they take a swim and find their wallet and camera missing when they get back for example.
Recently, Tina's Hostel which is 100 yards from the Police Station, has been hit with a crime spree by more than one individual, to the point that we could expect to be robbed every Friday and Saturday night since December. This has been terrible for business as one would imagine. This forced me to make the necessary investment to install security cameras since the individuals had been going un-detected even by all the guests who are usually up and partying into the wee hours of the morning.
The camera's were only installed yesterday and you know what??? WE GOT OUR FIRST RAT IN THE TRAP!!!! Here is the thief who is currently sitting in jail charged for theft - Hip, Hip, Hurray!
The damn stray dog who uses the couch to sleep at night actually seemed to open his eyes to see who is coming in, but the lazy bastard didn't even make a snarl.
We always think we know all the thieves, but then again with so many new faces arriving weekly, we have lost track of who is a tourist, who is a local and who is just here to burglarize for the weekend.
If you can afford the to make the investment for camera's, please do it. We need to get these vermins off the streets.
